AHAB and JEZEBEL

PRIDE BUSTERS

PRIDE AND LAND GRABBING

Ahab the ruler over Israel, wanted to purchase a vineyard next to his palace.  He offered money or a trade for a better vineyard.

"...Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard which was in Jezreel beside the palace of Ahab the king of Samaria."

Ahab spoke to Naboth

"Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetable garden because it is close beside my house, and I will give you a better vineyard than it in its place; if you like, I will give you the price of it in money."

But the owner of the vineyard, Naboth, chose to obey the law of God, refusing to give away the land, because it was the inheritance of his fathers.

Naboth said to Ahab

"The LORD forbid me that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers."

So Ahab came into his house sullen and vexed because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he said, "I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers."  And he lay down on his bed and turned his face and ate no food.

Jezebel his wife came to him and said to him,

"How is it that your spirit is so sullen that you are not eating food?"

So he said to her,

"Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite and said to him, 'Give me your vineyard for money; or else, if it pleases you, I will give you a vineyard in its place.'   But he said, I will not give you my vineyard."

Evil Jezebel has a plan to steal the property.

Jezebel his wife said to him,

Do you now reign over Israel?  Arise, eat bread, and let your heart be joyful; I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite."

So she wrote letters in Ahab's name and sealed them with his seal, and sent letters to the elders and to the nobles who were living with Naboth in is city.

GOD HATES FALSE WITNESSES

Now she wrote in the letters, saying,

"Proclaim a fast and seat Naboth at the head of the people; and seat two worthless men before him, and let them testify against him, saying, "You cursed God and the king."
Then take him out and stone him to death.

So the men of his city, the elders and the nobles who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent word to them, just as it was written in the letters which she had sent them.   They proclaimed a fast and seated Naboth at the head of the people.

Then the two worthless men came in and sat before him; and the worthless men testified against him, even against Naboth, before the people saying, "Naboth cursed God and the king."

So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death with stones.'

Then they sent word to Jezebel, saying, "Naboth has been stoned and is dead."

When Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, Jezebel said to Ahab, “Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth, the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money; for Naboth is not alive, but dead.” When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, Ahab arose to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.   1 KINGS 21:1-16  NASB  New American Standard Bible

DO YOU LIKE TO FELLOWSHIP?

I AM TALKING TO YOU

DOGS ARE MAN'S BEST FRIEND,
because they enjoy to fellowship.
Have you ever seen a dog want to stay home and choose not to go out for a walk?

..."let us consider how to stimulate one another to LOVE and GOOD DEEDS, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near."  Hebrews 10:24-25

WHY DO DOGS ENJOY FELLOWSHIP
MORE THAN PEOPLE?

SONS of THUNDER

JAMES, JESUS AND JOHN

Jesus gave some of His disciples nicknames.  Simon was given the nickname "Peter."  And James and John were called the "Sons of Thunder."
"And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and that He could send them out to preach, and to have authority to cast out demons.  And He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom gave the name "Peter"), and James, the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James (to them He gave the name Boanerges, which means,"Sons of Thunder");
Mark 3:14-17 NASB

On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus sent His disciples on ahead of Him to look for a place to eat and sleep.   They entered a Samaritan village.
"When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem; and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements for Him."  Luke 9:51-52 NASB

The Samaritan's refused to give accommodations, because the disciples told them they were on their way to Jerusalem.  James and John got angry.

"But they did not receive Him, because He was traveling toward Jerusalem.   When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?"  Luke 9:53-54 NASB

"But He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what kind of spirit you are of; for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them."  And they went on to another village."  Luke 9:55-56 NASB

On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus and the disciples may have hiked the Jericho road.

"And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?”

So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and ‘your neighbor as yourself.

And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.”
But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”  Luke 10:25-29 NKJV

Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side.

But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion.  So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’

So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?”

And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”  Luke 10:30-37 NKJV

JESUS told the story of the Good Samaritan not only to the Lawyer; but to James and John the ''Sons of Thunder."

God doesn't want us to pray for lightning to zap people; but to have compassion and mercy.
